Employment Contracts in Rwanda

  • Professional employment in Rwanda always starts with an official letter of employment. 
  • Employers can usually include a 6 month probation period in their contracts.  
  • An employer can end an employment contract early if the employee violates the conditions of their contract. 
  • Employees are entitled to 15 days’ notice for service under a year and 1 month’s notice for service greater than a year. 
  • Severance pay is required for employees and is set at 1 month’s pay if they have been serving for less than 5 years. This increases to 2 months’ salary for service of 5 to 10 years, 3 months’ salary for 10 to 15 years of service, and 4 months’ salary for 15 to 20 years of service. 

Working Hours in Rwanda

  • The working week in Rwanda runs from Monday to Friday. 
  • Full-time employees generally work 8 hours per day, 45 hours per week. 
  • Employees are not allowed to work more than 45 hours per week without receiving overtime pay. 
  • Employees are entitled to a higher hourly rate for overtime. This is 150% of the basic rate. 

Annual Leave in Rwanda

  • Rwanda has 13 official national holidays. 
  • Employees are entitled to 18 days of paid annual leave every year. 

Sick Leave in Rwanda

  • When an employee is unable to attend work due to illness, they need to get a doctor’s note and present it to HR as soon as possible.  
  • Employees are entitled to up to 6 months of sick leave.  
  • Employees will get paid for the first 3 months, followed by the last 3 months being claimed from social security. 

 

Maternity / Paternity Leave in Rwanda

  • According to Rwandan law, female employees are entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave. 
  • Maternity leave can be claimed from social security. 
  • Male employees are entitled to 4 days of paternity leave. 

Tax Laws in Rwanda

  • Employers in Rwanda are responsible for withholding all taxes and social contributions. 
  • Employees contribute 3% towards social security, while employers contribute the equivalent of 5% of the employee’s salary.
