  • Professional employment in Burkina Faso always starts with an official letter of employment. 
  • In most cases, employers can include a probation period in their contracts, but this can’t exceed 3 months. 
  • An employer can end an employment contract early if the employee violates the conditions of the contract. 
  • Employees are entitled to 1 month’s notice for regular workers, 3 months for executives, and 8 days for hourly workers. 
  • Severance pay is required for many cases of termination employees and is set at 25% of the employee’s monthly wage for every year during the first 5 years of service, 30% for every year between the 5th and 10th year, and 40% of 1 monthly wage for every year after. 

Working Hours

  • The typical working week in Burkina Faso runs from Monday to Friday. 
  • Full-time employees generally work 8 hours per day, 48 hours per week. 
  • Employees are not allowed to work more than 40 hours per week without receiving overtime pay. 
  • Employees are entitled to a higher hourly rate for overtime. This is 115% of the hourly rate for the first 8 hours of overtime, 135% for each hour after 48 hours, 150% for each hour worked at night, 160% for each hour on Sundays and holidays, and 220% for each hour during the night on Sundays and holidays.

  • Employees are entitled to 22 days of paid annual leave every year.  

Sick Leave

Employees are eligible for up to 10 days paid sick/ carer’s leave, plus 2 days of compassionate/ bereavement leave.   

Employers are also expected to allow for volunteer or emergency leave when necessary. However, this is typically unpaid (except in the case of jury duty). 

Parental Leave

  • According to Burkinabé law, female employees are entitled to 14 weeks of maternity leave.
