Employment Contracts in Chad

  • Professional employment in Chad should start with a letter of employment. 
  • In most cases, employers can include a 3-month probation period in their workers’ contracts.  
  • An employment contract should specify and describe the employee’s role in detail. 
  • An employer can end the contract early if the employee violates the conditions of their employment contract. 
  • Employees are entitled to 1 month’s notice if they have been with the company for a year. This extends to 2 months’ notice for 3 years of service. All other employees are entitled to 15 days of written notice. 
  • Severance pay is required for employees being let go in Chad as long as they have served for more than 2 years. This is typically calculated as 25% of the employee’s salary per year for years 2 to 5. This increases to 30% of the employee’s gross monthly pay for years 5 to 10. 

Working Hours

  • The working week in Chad runs from Monday to Friday. 
  • Full-time employees generally work 8 hours per day. 
  • Employees are not allowed to work more than 39 hours per week without receiving overtime pay. 
  • Employees are entitled to a higher hourly rate for overtime. This is 10% more per hour for the first 8 hours of overtime. This increases to 25% for every hour above 8 hours of overtime. 
  • There is also a 50% surcharge for employees working overtime at night and on rest days, which is typically on Sundays. 
  • There is a 100% premium for working on public holidays. 

Types Of Leave

Holidays and Annual Leave

  • Chad has 8 official national holidays. 
  • Employees are entitled to 24 days of paid annual leave every year.  
  • Employees who have served for more than 10 years are entitled to 26 days of paid leave. 

Sick Leave

  • When an employee is unable to attend work due to illness, they need to get a doctor’s note and present it to HR as soon as possible.  
  • Employees are entitled to up to 6 months of sick leave.  

Parental Leave

  • According to Chadian law, female employees are entitled to 14 weeks of maternity leave. 
  • Maternity leave can be claimed from social security. 
  • Male employees are entitled to 2 weeks of paternity leave. 

Tax Law

  • Employers in Chad are responsible for withholding all taxes and social contributions for their employees. 
  • Employers contribute an additional amount equivalent to 16.5% of an employee’s salary to their social security fund, while employees contribute 3.55%. 
  • The corporate income tax rate is set at 35% for both local and foreign companies. 
  • Personal income tax ranges from 0% to 30%, broken down as follows based on the employee’s rate of income in Central African Franc (XAF):
